2006 Olympics: Luciano Pavarotti “Nessun Dorma”

November 27, 2008

Compare this version with Paul Potts’ version on Britain’s Got Talent.

Pavarotti sang Nessum Dorma during the Opening Ceremony of the 2006 Torino Olympics (2-10-06), which ended up being his last performance – though at the time he didn’t know it.

He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer five months later and died 9-6-07.

In his 2008 book: Pavarotti Visto da Vicino, the conductor, Leone Magiera, admitted that Pavarotti lip-synched (while the orchestra pretended to play, he pretended to conduct and a pre-recorded video played) because of the cold weather that would have made it impossible for him to hit the ending notes, which are the highest in the tenor range.

They all gave a rather convincing performance and received a thunderous ovation.
