2010 – 65th Anniversary
Ms Shain has passed

Found in the drafts. The famous LIFE VJ Day photo “The Kiss” of the nurse and the sailor was recreated. Here’s the background post from Nov 2008 when Edith Shain was finally identified.

Sailor Glenn McDuffie, 18, kissed nurse Edith Shain. She left Doctor’s Hospital and he came out of the subway because he realized his brother would be freed from a Japanese prison camp. After the kiss they walked in opposite directions – not exchanging a single word. Alfred Eisenstaedt, the photographer, who died in 1995 met both of them and said he didn’t think it was either of them.

Ms. Shain recreated “The Kiss” with a Vietnam Veteran. She wanted it to be dug up again because of the boys who came back man, who fought for us. It is a yearlong campaign culminating on the 65 year anniversary.

Mr McDuffie had lung cancer in 2007 so I don’t know if he has since passed. I imagine if he could have made it he would have. Couldn’t find anything on Google.

Vodpod videos no longer available.
