Pediatric flu vaccine: seasonal, H1N1

September 25, 2009

Updated H1N1 posts/symptoms/vaccine

CDC 46 children have died from H1N1

Data from the first pediatric clinical trials:
Approximately 600 children
Not a single adverse reaction – not even redness or sore injection site

8-10 days after single dose of vaccine – “robust” immune response:

76 % 10-17
36% 3 – 9
25% 6 – 35 months

H1N1 vaccine reacts like those for seasonal flu strains
Children 10 – 17 seem to be protected with one 15-microgram dose (like adults)
Children 6 months – 9 may need 2 doses – depending on their medical history

Possibility that children will need four vaccines – 2 for seasonal – 2 H1N1

Recommended to get seasonal vaccines now because it is available
Can be vaccinated for both unless they’re given FluMist for seasonal flu because it contains the live virus
If two doses of H1N1 vaccine needed they would 21 days.

Final recommendations for younger children will be made in October
