The new addition to the Navy fleet, the USS New York was commissioned Saturday in Manhattan. It is a San Antonio class amphibious transport dock ship and was built on the Gulf Coast and incorporated 7.5 tons of steel from the World Trade Center.
It was docked at Pier 88, just north of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum for the ceremony and will be on public display until Nov 11, when it will return to Norfolk, VA, with COMMANDER CURTIS JONES at the helm.
Secretary of the Navy RAY MABUS: “I hereby place the USS New York in commission. Man our ship and bring her to life!”
