What entails a hate crime?

NOTE: Hate crimes against LGBT far exceeded those against Muslims, which actually decreased from 2007, while crimes against LGBT increased 28%.

Offenses by bias: 9,160

Approx 4% population identifies as LGBT and yet there is a disproportionally high percentage of hate crimes.

Crimes against persons: 5,542 (5,408)

  • 48.8 (47.4)  – intimidation.
  • 32.1 (31.1) – simple assault.
  • 18.5 (20.6) – aggravated assault.
  • 0.3  - 7 (9) murders and 11 forcible rapes.

This number has to be much higher, since rape is the crime that is under-reported, especially rape of homosexuals.

Crimes against property: 3,608 (3,579)

  • 82.3 (81.4) – acts of destruction/damage/vandalism.

  • Robbery, burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, arson, other.

Crimes against society: 18 (19)
