Lt Choi returned to training

Don’t ask don’t tell posts
WaPo/ABC Poll: DADT
Well. Something positive has happened. Lt Dan Choi, who was recommended for discharge for saying “I am gay” on the Rachel Maddow Show last May but not yet discharged, is back in training. He spent last weekend training with his National Guard unit in preparation of a possible deployment to Afghanistan in the future.
Seems great thanks are in order for Adm Mullen, Secy Clinton Secy Gates, Colin Powell, Iraq and Vietnam War veterans, members of Congress, esp Ret 3-star Admiral Rep Joe Sestak, Lt Col Victor Fehrenbach, Rachel Maddow, Knights Out, the LGBT community and folks in general.
Lt Choi reminds that at any moment he could be summarily discharged since the ruling has already been made.
Worth listening to. He sounds a lot different than immediately after the hearing.
Audio of interview with NPR‘s SCOTT SIMON.

The truth is, Gays and Lesbians have served our country since its founding.
They defended our country even before our country learned how to discriminate against them
2010 Olympics: kd Lang “Hallelujah”
February 13, 2010February 13, 2o1o
2-16 Don’t bother with youtube – they’re all frauds. Need to go to the Olympics website. Link below.
Yes, Miss Mary, I agree. k.d.Lang did Canada and her fellow Canadian Leonard Cohen proud. There is no free video to embed and I couldn’t find the recording on itunes. The IOC/NBC has everything licensed. You can watch it on the Olympics website though you have to download Microsoft’s video player (mac compatible). But the quality is amazing and there are close-ups of Lang that weren’t on the NBC coverage. The opening ceremony highlights are there as well as interviews and athlete profiles. Unbelievably, they still have the video of Georgian Nodar Kumaritashvili’s horrific death. Don’t they realize his life ended at that exact moment?
If you don’t want to download the player, here’s Lang performance at the 2005 Juno Awards (Canadian Grammys). She rocked the house. Had it in another post (with John Cale’s version) but thought I’d post it here as well. Here if you prefer Justin Timberlake – Matt Morris’ Hope for Haiti Now version.
I imagine they’re saving Celine Dion for closing ceremonies.

Condolences to our readers from Georgia

Gamardjoba,
We extend our condolences on the sudden and tragic death of your countryman Nodar Kumaritashvili. What should have been a time of great joy and fulfillment has become a time of great sorrow.
May God grant Nodar’s family, trainers and teammates the strength and peace to carry on in his honor.
We apologize for the insensitivity NBC and internet sites have shown in posting video and graphic photos of the fatal accident. There are no words to describe how wrong that is.

Rep Patrick Kennedy not seeking re-election (video)
February 12, 2010Rep Patrick Kennedy says his life is taking a new direction and he will not be running for re-election.
Rep Patrick Kennedy eulogy for father (video/text)
Video statement
[hand transcribed]
REP PATRICK KENNEDY:
My father instilled in me a deep commitment to public service, whether through elected office like he and his brothers or through nonprofit advocacy like my Aunt Eunice’s work with Special Olympics.
Now having spent two decades in politics, my life is taking a new direction, and I will not be a candidate for re-election this year.
Going forward, I will continue many of the fights we’ve waged together, particularly on behalf of those suffering from depression and addiction, autism and post-traumatic stress disorder.
I am so grateful to the people of Rhode Island. When I made missteps or suffered setbacks, you responded not with contempt, but compassion….
To those who treated me like a son or grandson, thank you for your faith and unconditional support.
To those who stood by me like a brother, thank you for all the times you lifted me up, pushed me forward, and filled my heart with hope. By standing on your shoulders, I was able to do more to advance my family’s fight for social justovr and more for our great state than I ever thought was possible.
Quotes from ‘Patrick Kennedy: Don’t Count the Kennedy’s out by the Golbe’s John R. Ellement, Eric Moskowitz, and Martin Finucane
I wouldn’t count us out for good, you know.
It’s just been a personal decision to follow a different path in life. I think people just reach a point in their life where they choose to go a different direction. It’s really nothing more complicated than that.
It’s pretty simple in this respect: I went through something that caused me a great deal of soul searching and self-reflection. Right now, a personal life is of greater value. Emotional connections that are real and loving and personal just trump everything else. Something like that forces you to have reconsideration of what’s really important in your life.
His service to RI vs his personal life:
I would’t have changed a thing in terms of my service in politics because it really gave me a great opportunity to feel of service, but I also know that having those personal relationships are very important, too, and they take time and they take investment. And I want to make those investments and spend that time developing those relationships. So there’s that chance now that I have in the future to do that kind of thing.

Andrea Mitchell mocks Sarah Palin (video)
February 11, 2010February 8, 2010
Daily Rundown
I don’t know where you’ve been ILove AndreaMitchell – but the object of your love mocked Sarah Palin, something I would never have expected out of a professional. It’s like she’s back in grade school and it shows that Palin’s remark hit home.
What are they going to do when they finally realize she is not going to run for president? Find something else to mock her about. barry and the rest of his little weasels must be complaining and the barrymedia is doing like they always have.
When are they going to realize they are tools?
And ILove AndreaMitchell – Here’s a little hint about social interaction: swearing at someone while requesting something is not exactly effective. I was posting it anyway. Make sure you watch GIBBS and MATTHEWS, et al mock her as well as MARK MCKINNON referring to her as “catnip laced with crack”.

VP Biden re: Sarah Palin “I like her”
February 11, 2010February 10, 2010
VP Joe Biden’s turn on Larry King after FLOTUS. Here’s his little bit on Sarah Palin who he likes as a person.
KING: All right. All I have to say is say her name — Sarah Palin.
BIDEN: I like her.
KING: She wanted your job.
BIDEN: Yes, well, you know, everybody keeps (INAUDIBLE) –
KING: Do you like her?
BIDEN: I do. I like her. She’s an engaging person. She has a great personality. I don’t agree with what she says and I think some of the things she says are not — well, I — I — I — I — I –
KING: What were you going to say?
BIDEN: Well, you know, it’s — it’s sort of like some — some of the comments made are just so far sort of out there, I just don’t know where they come from. But, she — if you — if you met her, she’s an engaging person.
KING: I’ve met her.
BIDEN: I understand why people like her.
KING: Do you fear her — I mean fear her, in a sense, politically fear her?
BIDEN: No, I don’t. Look, I — I’ve not done as much the law of politics as I used to do when I was a senator. I mean, this job, I’ve been given big chunks of assignments — Iraq this, et cetera. So I’m not up to being able to give you the poll numbers. But my sense is that Sarah appeals — Governor Palin appeals to a group of people who are generally frustrated, feel disenfranchised, are — are very conservative — not all of them and –
KING: Tea Party people.
BIDEN: Tea Party people, but beyond that. She has appeal beyond that, as well. But — but I don’t know that it represents a — anything approaching a — a significant portion of the population.
Oprah ridicules Geisha
February 11, 2010February 10, 2010
Update: Both videos initially worked – now they don’t. Thanks Mickey. All I could find to replace them is a promo for the show but it shows a small bit of Oprah’s comment. The AOL link still works (at least right now) and Oprah’s can be viewed on her site.
Source: Oprah Show (pix, video, quotes)
Dr Fiona Graham (Sayuki) was born in Australia and has a MBA from Oxford. She attended high school and college in Japan, and returned as an anthropological filmmaker years later to study geisha.
In order to research geisha, I really needed to become one. It started out as a documentary proposal. But as time went on, it got more serious and in depth, and I decided to continue.
Now Sayuki, she is the only Caucasian woman to ever become a full-fledged geisha in Japan.
I think it’s a good thing for geisha to be more involved in the center of modern life and more visible to young Japanese women today.

Oprah is dismissive and disrespectful – spurred on by the audience. The tea ceremony is an important respectful ritual and not easy to master. Sayuki special talent is yokobue (Japanese flute).
From Saykui’s website:
Sayuki took an MBA at Oxford before turning to social anthropology, and specializing in Japanese culture. Sayuki has lectured at a number of universities around the world, and has published several books on Japanese culture. She is also an anthropological film director with credits on international broadcasters.
SAYUKI: The perception is that geisha engage in prostitution if the price is right.
Sex has never been part of the geisha’s job.
Geisha women, like any other women, fall in love and they might have affairs, but it’s never, ever part of the job.
Here Sayuki is getting dressed with the help of a kimono expert. She explains the customary fees and procedure on her website. (30,000 yen = $335 USD)

His guests, Andrea Mitchell, Gibbs, McKinnonn mock Palin
Hardball
If she doesn’t then why are they spending so much time talking about her? If you listen to it she doesn’t know what she is talking about and yet day after day Matthews talks about her as a presidential candidate. It no longer is to tear her down as a potential candidate – she’s doing that all by herself – it’s because she went after barry “to toughen up” and because she is a woman.
Played a clip of Palin and Chris Wallace talking about a “war card”…just like yesteraday.
MATTHEWS: She’s frightening. That’s frightening stuff. Frightening. First of all, presidents do not declare war – anybody knows that in high school…Why does she talk like that. Where does [sic] people get talk…
MARK HALPERIN: She is out there freelancing and flailing and relying on what’s gotten her this far. I don’t think you can overstate the extent to which she is the dominant figure in the Republican Party today for 2010 and 2012. I also don’t think you can overstate the extent to which answers like that – it’s lucky they weren’t worse because she’s obviously flailing.
Even if she’s not going to be president. Be a serious person. Learn what you need to learn. She told Chris Wallace she knows more now than she did as governor of Alaska. Answers like that don’t manifest that that is true.
Palin in response to Greta Van Susteren’s serious questions:
MATTHEWS: Nothing comes out. She says nothing spontaneously when you ask her a serious question….It was stunning….[AILES-FOX] should pay her only for entertainment purposes.
She has nothing going on mentally….she’s got nothing going on mentally.
How he would feel with her as president?
I’d be afraid of her because I think she’s an empty vessel ready to be filled by ideology she doesn’t even understand, and that is really scary.
Nothing is more frightening than an empty vessel in power.
Yep. Just look at barry.

And why is the WH bothering with Sarah Palin?
How can they compare Palin’s palm notes for a speech she was getting paid good money to get right vs barry’s reliance on TOTUS – even for remarks to his own staff?

POTUS signs executive order for establishing a childhood obesity task force (video/text)
FLOTUS kicked off her “Let’s Move” campaign to stop the epidemic of childhood obesity.
I can’t seem to find the transcript to her remarks on the WH site.
Here’s an introduction and guideline to the campaign: First Lady Michelle Obama Launches Let’s Move: America’s Move to Raise a Healthier Generation of Kids.
Here are some depressing stats:
Over last three decades – the incidence of childhood obesity has tripled.
Nearly 1 in 3 children are overweight or obese
Nearly 1 in 3 children born in 2000 or later will contract diabetes during their lifetime.
Health care costs of obesity-related diseases = $147B per year.
I like how they worded this:
This epidemic also impacts the nation’s security, as obesity is now one of the most common disqualifiers for military service.
The first step should be removing vending machines from schools or at the very least change their contents. And the second – no sugared drinks for sale anywhere in school. Third – mandatory gym class for at least 45 minutes.

Barnicle flips: Teapartiers “are NOT all birthers”
February 9, 2010February 8, 2010
Morning Joe
Give Mike Barnicle a couple of days and he will contradict himself. This time about teapartiers and birthers. On the 2nd, says the media overlooked the teapartiers and that birthers are teapartiers. Today he says teapartiers are not all birthers and the media covered them too much over the summer.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the video.
BARNICLE:
That’s the thing that emerged from Massachusetts about Tea Party people. They’re not all birthers and those crazy people we showed too much of last summer.
MIKA:
It’s evolving and diverse.
JOE SCARBOROUGH:
We didn’t win Massachusetts and Virginia, New Jersey talking about birthers.
When are they going to get teapartiers are a group of angry people who are not happy with the media first and foremeost and secondly barry. At this point, they do not have well-delineated or defined ideas or a cohesive strategy – but it doesn’t matter. They are a force to be reckoned with.
Tea Party, Andrew Breitbart to media “It’s you that sucks!”
February 9, 2010February 7, 2010
Doesn’t get much clearer than this. But out of all the MSNBC talking heads to go after – it’s not Keith Olberman or Chris Matthews or Chuck Todd or even Rachel Maddow – it’s Contessa Brewer. Gives a little insight into his gyne envy.
mghoft
I know these people. I have cocktails with them when I got into Washington DC and they go: ‘I understand that it’s an act, Andrew. You’re not really one of those people’.
[laughter]
Oh, you better bet your ass I am!
[laughter - standing O - cheering]
When I watched [affected voice] Contessa Brewer on MSNBC [laughter] raise the question whether or not a protest was racist, in which she showed a man have his gun around his chest in his holster – MSNBC did an entire discussion on: are these protests, with these gun-wielding freaks [laughter], are they racist?
Does everybody here know what happened with that photo where they cut the head off?
[crowd: Yes]
That was an African-American gentleman.
[cheering]
That my friends is not media bias.
That is contempt for the American people.
[applause]
In order to create the perception that the minority is the majority and the majority is not just minority, but a bad, racist, homophobic – all those buzzwords that they’ve learned in the freshman orientation class at Wesleyan [laughter] are used as weapons to try to destroy you and to intimidate you to not speak up and to speak your mind.
To the media:
And your days of doing this are over!
[Standing O - cheering]
It’s not your business model that sucks – it’s you that sucks!
I don’t know if this man is a perpetual ragger but he didn’t appreciate Joseph Farah’s mention of barry’s birth certificate in his speech. What was Breitbart expecting him to talk about it? Farah previewed his speech on his website before he gave it. Anyway – the two had words. Another post.
Gene Robinson: “we don’t want another political messiah come to deliver the nation from evil”
February 9, 2010February 4, 2010
It seems Gene Robinson has turned the corner on barry. Listen to his words about Sen Scott Brown and decide what he thinks of barry now. His TV appearances are even clearer.
ROBINSON:
When I heard Scott Brown, the newly elected senator from Massachusetts, describe himself as a “Scott Brown Republican,” I groaned. It sounded as if he’s coming to Washington to be part of the problem, not part of the solution.
We don’t need another knight in shining armor, don’t want another political messiah come to deliver the nation from evil.
We’ve already got one in the White House and one in Alaska ready to ride her snowmobile into town and save the day.
Both the Senate and the House are liberally sprinkled with lone wolves who believe the legislative process revolves around them. Instead of “E Pluribus Unum” — “Out of Many, One” — our new motto could be “I Did It My Way.”
And then he flat out lies:
Clearly, though, his status as the Next Big Thing appears to have gone to his head: When asked by ABC’s Barbara Walters whether he had presidential ambitions, he refused to rule out a run for the White House in 2012.
Here’s the interview transcript (2:00) and the video – you decide.
therightscoop
WALTERS: Yes. You know when I was with you just a little while ago with the crowd, one of the women said — behind me — said, “President 2012.” And you said to me — or under your breath, “That’s silly.” But do you rule it out?
BROWN: I — I have to — I have to tell you, I don’t even have a business card. I haven’t even been sworn in. I don’t have any exploratory committees started. I don’t have any — anything — it’s — it’s overwhelming, and it’s extremely humbling. I don’t know how — what else to tell you.
And it seems Gene forgot that barry was asked immediately after he won his senate seat if he was going to run for president. He said he wasn’t qualified and about 18 months later he suddenly considered himself qualified when he hadn’t done anything. Brown actually has. He has been in the national guard for 30 years and a state senator for 6 years. However, he won’t have the advantage barry had – he isn’t biracial, he won’t be running against Hillary Clinton to get the nomination and he won’t have the entire DNC and barrymedia cheating for him.
Clearly a dig at barry:
At least he’s not the first senator from his state to be for something before he was against it.
Can’t deal with the one we already have:
The last thing Washington needs is another politician who refers to himself as his own brand and promises to chart his own lonely path.
The mighty Obamessiah is all teleprompter reading:
But one thing we don’t have is a shortage of elected officials who see themselves as saviors of all that is good. President Obama was elected to change Washington. If everybody in town tries to sing “My Way,” we get a serenade — but we don’t get the solutions the country so urgently needs.
If barry can’t do it – Sen Brown sure ain’t:
But what goes around comes around, and now the GOP’s crucial 41st vote in the Senate — the vote that can thwart just about anything the Democrats want to do — belongs to a man who promises only that he will march to his own drummer. Good luck with that.
There is clearly a major testosterone difference between Scott and barry. Scott carries himself as someone who can and will and is capable of doing something because he actually can state what he believes in.
I just realize I didn’t post Bob Herbert’s column from last week. I’ll have to find it in the drafts. Herbert wasn’t so vague.
WND’s Kingsolving: Katie Couric should donate her salary to save jobs at CBS
February 9, 2010February 9, 2010
This has to be the most bizarre post I’ve seen lately. WND’s Lester Kingsolving is wondering why “anchor lady” Katie Couric isn’t sharing her salary with other CBS employees who are allegedly being laid off.
I saw the exchange in the press briefing transcript and had no idea where it was coming from, especially when Gibbs addressed him as Chip instead of Lester. After reading his post I still have no idea.
Why is he focused on Katie Couric?
America is still known as “The Land of Opportunity.” And this made me wonder why CBS’ anchor lady, Katie Couric, has not, reportedly, offered to share some of her income to save dozens of her fellow CBS employees – whom the New York Observer and the New York Post, among others, reported are being laid off.
His emphasis.
And why is it he thinks it’s her job to give up her salary to other people?
Because Drudge said she is “the highest-paid TV news personality in history”.
Would he be asking anchor dude Dan Rather to give money to CBS employees?
And why isn’t he going after David Letterman who is costing CBS around $32M a year?
How many employees could he save?
And what about Conan O’Brien getting $32M for 8 months work and then leaving his employees, many of whom traveled with him from New York, without jobs?
And somehow his logic gets him to where he thinks Katie Couric should only be paid what barry makes.
Will Katie Couric ask that all of her salary, except the same amount as Obama’s salary, be shared with her fellow CBS employees, to save them from being laid off?
What planet is this sexist old fart on?
His smirk in his pix says it all.

And why is Lester getting paid at all when he’s not even man enough to push Gibbs about barry’s birth certificate – even after Gibbs opened the door and said they could talk about it “next week”?
And did good old Lester ask?
Nope.
Gibbs asked him if he had his birth certificate and Lester said: “I’m not going to ask about that.”
Here’s his bizarre exchange with Gibbs.
Feb 4th press briefing:
LESTER: In his commendable concern for the unemployed, the president would be gratified if Katie Couric would share 14.5 of her widely reported $15 million salary to rescue those hundreds of CBS employees laid off, so she would still have an income similar to the president’s, wouldn’t he?
GIBBS: Chip – (Laughter.)
GIBBS: Chip is – no. Look, Lester, Lester, I’m – Lester, I’m happy to answer questions on policies that the government –
LESTER: This is unemployment. This is unemployment.
MR. GIBBS: Lester, I don’t think it’s appropriate for me to get into the compensation of a network any more than it is for me to get into your compensation.
For once Gibbs makes sense.
Lester concludes with this:
Earlier in the briefing, Gibbs mentioned: “This recession has cost us 7 million jobs.”
But when it came to all those jobs being lost at CBS, there was at the Obama White House no real comment of concern, but only an unwillingness to comment.
If he was concerned about this back on the 4th – why did he just post this today?
