Java: Let them eat…soil

March 19, 2010

Tuban, East Java

Indonesians it appears like to eat dirt. And not just any dirt. The snack is called “ampo” and it’s prepared from a dark clay-looking soil collected from paddy fields.

53 y/o Rasima (featured in the video) makes a special batch every day to bring to the market. She is the only one who makes it.

Final product

Fans say ampo has a cool, creamy texture. (Antara Photo)

Has to be an Indonesian form of pica. Wonder if anyone has analyzed the soil to see what’s in it.

Look at all the work that goes into it.
