Thought I’d put this update up here because it’s all new info.
Criminal complaint (pdf)
2030: CNN reporting: Did not appear in court – cooperating with authorities. “Waived Miranda Rights” and has no lawyer as yet.
Authorities were on to SHAHZAD by Sunday night. Initially they were just going to observe and record phone calls to see if he had help. Problem being Shahzad got spooked and decided to flee. FBI was surveilling him – but lost him on the way to the airport – as Shahzad was reserving his seat on the Emirated flight to Dubai and then on to Islamabad.
Placed on no-fly list Monday and the second tier – US Customs and Border Protection – stopped him.
Anderson Cooper: Reportedly the ticket agent at Emirates Airline notified authorities because he paid cash for a one-way ticket tp Pakistan. A decision was made to allow him to board and allow the plane to shut its doors. Before it could push back the doors were re-opened. Shahzad was arrested and removed from the flight.
“Under intense questioning” two other names on the flight “appeared suspicious” at which time the flight has to be called back from taxi-ing “out of an abundance of caution” the two men were removed, who were later cleared and released.
Only arrest in US: Faisal Shahzad
Admitted to driving the Pathfinder into Times Square and attempting to detonate the bomb.
Claims he acted alone despite admitting to explosives training in Pakistan in the equal opportunity (Pakistani Taliban, Afghan Taliban, al Qaeda-linked groups, general cavemen) terror region of Waziristan [near where he grew up - see below] sometime between June 2009 and his return February 3, 2010.
Reason for travel: visiting parents. Said he planned on staying in a hotel in CT while he looked for a job and place to live.
Left wife (Univ Colorado grad) and 2 children behind.
Young male, traveling alone, one-way ticket, paid cash at ticket counter, naturalized US citizen for 10 months - out of the country 8 months in known terrorist breeding ground.
Staff immediately notified airport officials. Don’t know what the notification set off.
He had a sign around his neck saying check my diapers for a bomb and he was able to get in no problem. How many other folks are there like this? Wasn’t a case of profiling…unless they have been watching him since his re-entry. Not likely to divulge that.
What’s known about him:
2005 Graduated Univ Bridgeport Graduate School of Business (MBA)
2006 Entered US on student visa (also heard work visa)
Mid-2006 – June 2009 Junior financial analyst for Affinion Media Group “marketing and data management” in Norwalk, CT.

As below, records of his vehicle transaction led to phone number, which led to his prepaid phone, which led to records of calls from Pakistan.
Phone activated on April 16 – April 28.
12 calls from Pakistan. 5 calls on the day he bought the Pathfinder. Advice on VIN numbers and license plates perhaps.
Phone found in Pathfinder was used to call a fireworks store in PA that carries M-88 firecrackers like the ones found in the vehicle.
Keys found in Pathfinder: matched the Isuzu found at airport, his residence in CT.
Has ID papers from Karachi – way South. Pakistani official says he has family there also.
According to a cousin, Shahzad’s father, Bahar Ul Haq, is a retired “vice-marshal” in the Pakistani Air Force, who still lives in Peshawar suburb of Hayatabad (Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa province). Residence empty when CNN went knocking.
“Several” arrests (as many as 3) were made at a residence in Pakistan Nazimabad district in Karachi thought to be where Shahzad was staying immediately prior to returning.
Brother, AMIR SHAHZAD, lives in Canada.
CNN Correspondent in Islamabad, Pakistan Reza Sayah spoke with Shahzad’s cousin.
COUSIN: This is certain that these people they never indulged in any criminal activities. Not a family member, Not, the villlage from which both of these people belongs, none of the village members involved in any criminal activities or any jihad activities.
Curious he brought uo “jihad” on his own.
Scroll down for charges and forensic evidence discovered.

Father of two who attempted to murder people – including Muslims, foreign nationals and children – he didn’t know.
Arrested at JFK attempting to flee to Dubai via Emirates Flight #202.
1400 Not initially Mirandized (public safety exception) for the airport interrogation. He was Mirandized after he was moved to Manhattan. Said to be cooperative before and after. Admitted his involvement.
0700 CNN Reza Sayah spoke with Emirates Airline – SHAHZAD was headed to Dubai and then to Islamabad. which is the route he would take if he was going to his hometown (see below).
Not sure if SHAHZAD had actually boarded the plane.
0400 From the AP:
Faisal Shahzad was identified by customs agents at John F. Kennedy International Airport and was stopped before boarding an Emirates airlines flight to Dubai….He had recently returned from a five-month trip to Pakistan, where he had a wife.
0500 CNN reporting that SHAHZAD was on the plane and the jetway had been pulled back when the plane was called to return to the gate. Confirmed by Secy Napolitano in press conference.
0530 CNN reporting 3 persons were removed from the plane – unknown whether the other 2 were involved in any way. Cleared and released. (air marshals?)
Still not sure if it was planned, a close call or a test of the TSA employees.
It was a close call. Suspect was identified Sunday night and placed on the no-fly list, which is what stopped him. DHS has the ability to turn the flight around after it left but didn’t say how far that extended to.
0530 Emirates flight #202 finally departs JFK.
0545 CNN reporting SHAHZAD was questioned at JFK for approx 3.5 hrs by members of the Joint Terrorism Task Force, NYPD and federal agents. He was then transported to Manhattan.
SHAHZAD claims he drove the Pathfinder into Times Square and that he was acting alone.
0600 WaPo reporting investigators uncovered forensic evidence (paper, fingerprints) that “indicate international ties”.
Arrest made by Depart of Homeland Security’s Customs and Border Protection – not NYPD.
Unknown if SHAHZAD was Mirandized. YES
Unknown charges. See below.

Claims to be married
NYT: Wife Huma Mian, 2 young children (girl, boy). Neighbor said he claimed he worked on Wall Street. Lived here at least 3 years.
CNN talked with Shelton, CT neighbor “Brenda” who said their children played together. Although he “didn’t like the light” and “jogged at night” – she suspected nothing. She said the wife had pretended she didn’t speak English until she was about to leave. Said they were moving to Missouri and after they left, the bank came out and changed the locks.
1030 CNN reporting he bought a home with his wife in 2004 in Shelton, CT. Foreclosure began December 2009. Owed more than $200K. Neighbor said the wife left home July 2009, but thinks the husband left before that. Still no word on what kind of work he did.
0630 CNN Reza Sayah: US Ambassador met with Pakistan Interior Minister. SHAHZAD born in Pabbi, Nowshera District (yellow below) NW Pakistan by the Afghan border, “a safehaven for Pakistani militants”. His family then moved to Peshawar, where he went to school and where his father still lives.
Shahzad also has a Karachi ID. The southern port of Karachi is the largest city in Pakistan. And has a residence and family members there. Ministry denies knowing of SHAHZAD before the incident.
Had to have come here with a plan to become a citizen. Especially the comment the spokesman for the Pakistani President made.
Why would they live here for at least three years and a month or two after he becomes naturalized his wife and children leave?
1500 Possible arrests in Pakistan

May 1 (International Workers Day) attempted bombing of Times Square.
Not known if SHAHZAD drove the Pathfinder himself.
SHAHZAD’s name on email sent during the Craig’s List transaction with registered owner of Pathfinder, which was sold over Craig’s List. His disposable phone helped track him down. Exchange made in a CT grocery store parking lot by the seller’s daughter. $1800 (have seen $1300) – no exchange of papers.
Pathfinder seller identified SHAHZAD via photo line-up.
Evidently after he received the vehicle he went and helped himself to license plates from Kramer autobody repair shop/junkyard. Everything taking place near his residence in CT.
Not known the impact of the video from PA tourist.

1045 CNN reporting a 9mm (purchased “within last several months”) with additional clips and ammo were found in a white Isuzu vehicle – felt to be the vehicle SHAHZAD drove to JFK. Flash powder and 15 bags of standard green fertilizer were found in the trash outside SHAHZAD’s CT residence. Also mentioned was a “hand drawn map” but it didn’t say what was on it or where it was found. Roommates are being interviewed – no word on the location.
1530 Diagram/explanation of bomb (video).
SHAHZAD to be arraigned later today in Manhattan Federal Court before Magistrate Judge Kevin Fox sometime after 1400 EST.
Eric Holder hinted during his first press conference that others were involved.
It’s clear that the intent behind this terrorist act was to kill Americans….But the American people should know that we are deploying every resource available, and we will not rest until we have brought everyone responsible to justice.
He didn’t come right out and say SHAHZAD was the only person involved and did not connect Times Square to anything overseas.
