Yesterday, BP CEO Tony Hayward had a photo op on the oil-contaminated beach in Louisiana and he was asked to explain his original comment:
I think the environmental impacts of this disaster is liked to have been very, very modest.
Does he truly believe there would have been no environmental impact even if it had never made it to shore?
HAYWARD:
I said that in the context of about a week ago when at that time we were being successful in keeping the oil off the shore. Clearly the defenses of the shore have been breached.
Problem is there were no “defenses of the shore” to breach. barry, the EPA and the Coast Guard have done nothing to stop the flow of oil inward. EPA issued BP a “demand” with a deadline concerning dispersant use but there’s been no “or else” and the deadline has long since passed.
