June 10, 2010

June 10, 2010

Rep Mike Quigley (15th) salutes the Stanley Cup champs on the floor of the House. He had made a bet with Philly native Rep Patrick Murphy who will have to don the Hawks sweater.

Mayor Daley had his own wager with Philly mayor Michael Nutter. Nutter will have to volunteer in a community garden and provide the produce to the Greater Chicago Food Depository as promised.

Senate Resolution introduced by Sens Durbin & Burris

Madam Speaker, you have no idea how much I’m going to enjoy this – but sometime late last night, Patrick Kane slipped a puck past a Philadelphia goaltender in overtime and the Chicago Blackhawks became the Stanley Cup Champions!

Congratulations to the team for their great season. Many of these players have played over 120 games this season, including the Olympics, to achieve their One Goal. A special thanks to the owner of the Blackhawks, Rocky Wirtz – while hockey never left Chicago, he brought it back. The management team of John McDonough, Jay Blunk, Stan and Scotty Bowman, Coach Quenneville, and Dale Tallon.

Madame Speaker, today, for all of us, with apologies, Chicago is [sings] “my kind of town”.

Bonus to winning the Cup was seeing JR involved in some fashion. He gets how rare a championship of any sort is in Chicago and how loyal fans are even through decades of losing. His only chance at the Stanley Cup was in 1992 when they got swept by the Penguins.

JR was doing the postgame with Dan Patrick and Mike Milbury and Patrick asked him why he was emotional. Wish I had video because it sums up JR and reflects the rest of the Blackhawks who never won or even had a chance.

Thanks to ThePhillyFans for the video.

JR: Congratulations to the fans – you guys deserve it. The Chicago Blackhawks deserve it. I’ve been there -  I know what its like. This is an emotional thing for me. Both these teams were warriors. They went out and they did great things for the National Hockey league.

Chicago, really enjoy this one.

Chokes up:

For the kid who was there in 1992, who was crying when I came off the ice after we lost game 4 in Chicago Stadium – you waited 18 years – I hope you have a big smile on your face. Congratulations.

PATRICK touches him on the shoulder:

I can tell – you’re emotional.

JR: Absolutely.

PATRICK: Why is it affecting you?

JR:

It’s the Chicago Blackhawks, man.

I didn’t get to do that. It’s pretty unbelieveable.

I’m proud and happy. Unbelievable. Can’t see this enough.

No crying here.

On the Hawks’ chances:

If they played like they played the last game in Chicago against the Philadelphis Flyers – or any team in the world – nobody could beat them.

And the players:

I think at this point in time they played so hard all through the year and the playoffs – I think they’ll take it there. And love it!

As for victory?

I am going to be able to enjoy this more at this time in my career than I did when we won it in 1961. I have more of a feeling for the organation, and the team, and for the entire city of Chicago  – more so than when I was playing for it in 1961.

Thanks to John McDonough.

Wonder where Stan, Tony and Chelios were. JR was moved to tears on air. And it was nice to see they didn’t forget about Denis Savard. And Dale Tallon?

3-time Olympic medalist Angela Ruggiero re: Chrissy Progner tutu

Glad to find a woman hockey player comment about the Chrissy Pronger tutu. Though I felt it was more directed at women’s figure skating. Folks watching the Stanley Cup had to have watched Olympic hockey and the US vs Canada women’s hockey matchup was more hyped then the men – so they had to have seen the caliber of hockey played.

3-time hockey Olympic medalist ANGELA RUGGIERO:

Obviously, it’s offensive. It’s disappointing more than anything. I grew up playing with boys, trained with NHL players. I would go head-to-head with Pronger any day I could.

Some people are still ignorant. Our sport doesn’t get a lot of exposure, so you have to see us play in the world championships or the Olympics to see what the highest caliber of women’s hockey is.

I’d like to see that editor out on skates. I’ll take them one-on-one on the ice any day. They obviously have never seen women’s hockey and are living in the dark ages.

No doubt. It’s time somebody put together a US vs Canada best of 7 series that switches countries each year.

Here’s the response from the Tribune sports editor MIKE KELLAMS:

For [Angela Ruggiero] and others who took offense, I apologize. No qualifiers, I’m sorry. We were just having a little fun with a guy who has come to personify all that has gotten under the collective skin of Blackhawks fans. Pronger is talented that way. And we were trying to connect to that emotion in a fun way.

I grew up in Indiana and came to hockey as an adult. Ruggiero vs. me on the rink would be no contest. I know that from what she and her team did at the Vancouver Olympics.

I don’t suppose this will move anyone on either side to change their minds about the image. Some seem to hate it more than anything in life. Others think it’s funny. I figure most folks don’t care either way. But it’s no more complicated than this: We were just trying to have a little fun. That’s really it. Honest.

Completely missed Ms Ruggiero’s point.

June 9, 2010

Yessssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss!

It’s been 17,951 days since the Hawks last won the Stanley Cup – April 16, 1961.

Totally wild ending to the game. Kane scored at 4:20 in OT. No one but Kane reacted – not even the referee. Doc Emrich even missed the call. I’ll see if I can find video.

KANE:

Yeah. I shot, I saw it go right through the legs. Sticking right under the pad in the net. I don’t think anyone saw it in the net. I booked it to the other end. I knew it was in. I tried to sell the celebration a bit. Everyone came down, and I think some guys were still kind of a little iffy to see if the puck was in the net. I saw the coaches there pointing at the puck and jumping around. It’s pretty surreal right now for sure.

Captain Jonathan Toews was named MVP.

Re: handing off the Cup to Hossa:

TOEWS: Yeah, well we talked about it very, very briefly this morning. Didn’t want to get overexcited or think too much of the end result, but mentioned it to him this morning to be ready, that if we did happen to hoist it tonight, that Duncan and Sharpy both agreed that he should be the first guy after myself to grab it. You know, it’s special for him. And I can’t imagine being a part of three long seasons like that and to win one finally. It’s amazing for all of us. But especially for him too for sure.

Energy Dept provides online access to BP raw data

The US Dept of Energy through Secy Chu has posted online relevant data from BP, including:

  • Timeline
  • Pressure readings within the blowout preventer
  • Rates/amounts of hydrocarbons captured by the top hat and riser insertion tube
  • Configurations of the Deepwater well, BOP stack tubes, and containment system

Why?

Transparency.

As part of the Obama Administration’s ongoing commitment to transparency surrounding the response to the BP oil spill…to ensure the public is as informed as possible, and to ensure that outside experts making recommendations have access to the same information that BP and the government have.

Then why didn’t they have the high-resolution video to assess the flow rate?

Secy Chu:

Transparency is not only in the public interest, it is part of the scientific process. We want to make sure that independent scientists, engineers and other experts have every opportunity to review this information and make their own conclusions.

Transparency without a plan of attack means nothing. What they should be posting is a list of what they have demanded BP do and what BP has done. Then the whole world can see what the administration has not been asking or demanding.

How does the president of the United States not speak directly to the CEO of the corporation responsible for the largest environmental disaster in US history?

Hey DrPhysics.

Energy Secy Chu has posted online all the raw data you’re interested in. Prof Wereley (plume team) will be coming out with a new estimate from the hi-resolution video released yesterday. Not sure why there is still a mystery. BP has to know the flow rate of the fully closed system.

This video has been available since day 1 and was released on day 50. It shows very clearly how much is spilling and it’s a lot more than anyone has calculated. BP did not provide this video to the Flow Rate Team for their official estimate. That is criminal.

Can see how wide open it is. Tom Foreman gives an excellent visual demonstration. Will have to find the video. HERE.

June 3

And yet, where was Energy Secretary Chu? Why didn’t he know this video was available? Why didn’t he notify the WH that BP had shut down their Top Kill procedure for 16 hours. Now in the spirit of “transparency” the Energy Dept has posted the raw data online.

It’s becoming clear why BP CEO Tony Hayward has been so arrogant. The President of the country he is fouling with oil hasn’t said a word to him. Our alleged Commander in Chief talks about the fishermen and the 11 men who were killed and their families and he doesn’t even have the simple courtesy to talk with the man responsible for their misery.

Reason?

He’s interested in actions not words.

Said it with a straight face. No worries though. If he “starts seeing BP nickel and diming folks down there then they are going to have to answer” to him.

Day 50. BP should have been answering to him on Day 1. But there’s no need to provide answers when no questions are asked.

If there is any wildlife left. See brown pelicans mired in the oil with it dripping off their beaks.

One hopes BP is finally beginning to see the environmental devastation of oil that did not have to reach the shore.

[BP] will donate the net revenue from oil recovered from the MC252 spill to create a new wildlife fund to create, restore, improve and protect wildlife habitat along the coastline of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida.

TONY HAYWARD:

We’ve already launched the largest environmental response in history, and BP is committed to protecting the ecosystems and wildlife on the Gulf Coast. Proceeds from the sale of oil recovered from the MC252 well will be used to further this commitment. We believe these funds will have a significant positive impact on the environment in this region.

Largest response to the largest catastrophe. And it can hardly be called it a “donation” when it came about after the talk of criminal prosecution. More like mitigation of future civil/environmental damages. And when will be the announcement of the human protection and rehabilitation fund?

JIMMY FALLON monologue

Tonight, the Obamas invited members of Congress to a picnic at the White House. They played all the classic picnic games: whifle ball, captuee the flag, and their favorite game, ignore the oil spill.

Featured foods from all 4 corners of the US. The Pacific Northwest provided the wild salmon and strawberrries and the southern Gulf Coast provided 400M gallons of salad dressing.

Today marked the 50th day of the BP oil spill…the oil spill is getting so old its tarballs are starting to sag.

On the Today Show this morning, Obama said he talks to oil experts to see whose ass to kick….as opposed to the last President who talked to oil experts so he knew whose ass to kiss.

Is it me or would Obama be the least scary bully of all time?

[Impersonates barry]

Gimme your lunch money or I swear to God I’ll consult a group of experts to advise me on the best way to proceed. I may give you a swirlie. Your ass is grass and I’m the lawnmower.

These birds are being rescued and transported to the Fort Jackson Rehabilitation Center by well-trained and knowledgeable wildlife responders, veterinarians, biologists and wildlife rehabilitators

Winds had nothing to do with it. Watch video of oil washing ashore the pelican rookery on MAY 23.

Folks say he’s cool and collected. Not true. He has plenty of emotion – when it has to do with him and his ego.

He did an interview for the Today Show set to air this morning. This is a 5-sentence clip released to CNN. I think their intent was to make him look tough. But this did nothing but harm. He’s angry and snippy and whines about the “talking heads” and then channels a little George Bush.

It is truly hard to believe this man is supposed to be in charge of this country.

I was down there a month ago. Before most of these talkin’ heads were even paying attention to the Gulf. A month ago, I was meeting with fishermen down there, standing in the rain, talking about what a potential crisis this could be.

And I don’t sit around just talking to experts because this is a college seminar. We talk to these folks because they potentially have the best answers so I know whose ass to kick.

Whose ass do you think he really wants to kick and in reference to what?

Do you think it had anything to do with the fishermen he whined about having to stand in the rain with?

Joran Van der Sloot has confessed to murdering Stephany Flores Ramirez. Background

No actual details of the act. Crime scene report evidently was leaked.

Treated better if he confessed.

Formal charges have yet to be set.

No capital punishment in Peru – max prison sentence 35 years.

Hearing possible this week – open it cameras.

*Update video with some details of the crime

CNN’s Rafael Romo reports.

“Very dramatic confession”

He was crying while he blamed the woman he murdered.

VDS: “I didn’t want to do it. The girl intruded into my private life.”

Evidently Flores Ramirez was looking at his laptop and discovered his connection to Natalee Holloway and he “lost control”.

Will be formally charged today.

He will also reenact the crime in the hotel room.

Sentence 15-35 years.

Aggravating factors: brutal nature of crime, the fact that he fled.

He said “there’s nothing offensive about our religion”. Not exactly true.
