Day 78
Imagine what is under the surface.
June 26 – Petit Bois Island (top right – 6 miles long) one of seven barrier islands that, along with some mainland areas of Mississippi and Florida, make up the Gulf Islands National Seashore. Eastern end of Horn Island (top left).
As of June 27, 2010, the entire gulf-facing beachfront of several barrier islands in eastern Mississippi (offshore of Pascagoula) had received a designation of at least “lightly oiled” by the interagency Shoreline Cleanup Assessment Team that is responding to the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. A few small stretches of Petit Bois Island had been labeled heavily or moderately oiled.

Day 77
-
A snapshot into the amount of oil released into the Gulf per daily flow rate estimates of 35K, 45K and 60K.
Per day: 35K brls (1470K gals)
Total: 2,685,083 brls (113M gals)
Per day: 45K brls (1890K gals)
Total: 3,452,265 brls (145M gals)
Per day: 60K brls (2520K gals)
Total: 4,603,027 brls (193M) gals
And as bad as this is – it says nothing about the consequences of the over 1M gallons of dispersant used and the methane gas dead zones in the Gulf.

American Morning – John Roberts
Top Chef‘s top judge and 5-time James Beard awardee (including 2010) Tom Colicchio has chosen to promote Gulf seafood on his menus in his many restaurants.
He mentions seafood is not usually tested and in this case the seafood coming out of the Gulf is being tested and has thus far been proven untainted. And it’s not like the Gulf fisherman are going to risk any chance of getting their lives and livelihoods back by sending out even one tainted fish.
70% of the Gulf is now open to fishing, including oyster beds.
Select quotes
COLICCHIO: What’s interesting is seafood typically is not tested. It goes from the fishermen to a distributor and gets to restaurants or supermarkets, whatever. There’s no USDA inspections. But the fish coming out of the Gulf now, every bit is being inspected. Since May 5th, I think there has been over 330 samples taken from 11,000 different fish, all of it 100 percent clean.
Why is he doing it?
COLICCHIO: You look at the spill and you have to feel sorry for what’s going on down there with the wildlife and people, the livelihoods. You ask yourself, how can we support them? This is one way to support them.
I talked to people from Louisiana Fish and Game, from NOAA, from the FDA, and they are saying it is clean. And so my feeling is that will he people know it is safe and — I can’t just say it is safe. I want to put it in my restaurants and actually sell it, stand behind it.

Monday, the Supreme Court decided (5-4) that the Chicago ban on handguns violated the Second Amendment, which affords individuals the right to keep and bear arms for self-defense in one’s home, and that it is applicable to all states through the 14th Amendment. The decision was written by barry’s good friend Justice Alito.
Today, the Chicago City Council passed (45-0) Mayor Richard Daley’s gun restrictions just a day after he proposed them. Problem is freshly store bought handguns are not the majority of weapons killing children in Chicago.
Source of specifics: Clout Street’s John Byrne Hal Dardick
1-New ordinance becomes law in 10 days
2-Potential owner must obtain a Chicago firearms permit
3-Permits: $100, good for 3 yrs, 21 or at least 18 with adult signature
4-Chicago PD has up to 4 months to process the application
5-Applicants must provide evidence of firearms training course (4 hrs classroom/1 hr practice on the range
6-Must carry Illinois firearms card (not sure if this includes fingerprints)
7-Register all guns with the city
8-Registration $15/gun every 3 years
9-No sale of firearms in Chicago
10-No firing ranges in Chicago
11-No assault weapons
12-Ineligible: violent crimes, 2 or more DUIs
13-Illegal gun owners given 90 days after enactment to register guns without penalty
14-Limit of 1 handgun per month per each qualified adult
15-Limit of 1 ready to fire firearm per registered owner in the home – all others must be broken down or have trigger locks
16-Minors present – all guns “must be secured” when not in direct possession of registered owner
17-Possession of firearm allowed only inside the registered owner’s home
18-Outside dwelling (including porch and garage) firearm must be disassembled/incapable of firing and in a proper case.
Don’t know if any of this involves fingerprinting, background and/or mental health history. Not sure if “violent crimes” includes registered sex offenders and convicted child abusers. And not sure why they didn’t mandate guns safes.

Arizona Gov Jan Brewer is calling barry’s bluff. Even as he ragged about the bill and his AG threatened to sue (having never read the bill) and his Secy of Homeland Security (who had the bill on her desk) pretended not to know what was in it, no one from the WH had the common decency to respond to Gov Brewer. Only after Gov Brewer spoke with Greta Van Susteren and let it be know no one from the WH had contacted her, was she allowed a WH visitation – June 3.
Comment with video:
Earlier this month, Gov Jan Brewer sat in the Oval Office with President Barack Obama to discuss the critical issue of border security….During their visit, President Obama committed to present details, within two weeks of their meeting, regarding his plans to commit National Guard troops to the Arizona border and commit to spend $500M in additional funds on border security.
The video was posted on June 25. Today, almost a month after he met with Gov Brewer, he gave another SPEECH. And did he lay out any concrete plans? No. He ragged about Republicans.
How much longer are folks going to fall for this charade?

Hello Grace.
Thank you for your kind words. Yes. I have found a lot of oil-soaked wildlife pix in the drafts. I’ve given up trying to figure out why some things post and some don’t. The problems boil down to WP adding ads to the posts and I’m trying to decide whether to stick it out here or move somewhere else or just quit all together. WP support employees located in US, UK, Israel and Portugal have access to all WP blog accounts – including password protected posts. An odd assortment of countries. Wouldn’t bet the list is complete either. Anyway. I’ll post what I’ve found. I took the BP spill cam feed off the front page because they were hijacking it for news reports.
