65th Anniversary Times Square V-J Day Kiss

August 14, 2010

It’s a shame Ms Edith Shain – the nurse kissing the sailor in Alfred Eisenstaedt’s iconic photo – was not able to be present for the 65th Anniversary of VJ Day. She passed at the age of 91 in June and had been the face of the ‘Keep the Spirit of ’45 Alive’ campaign that was to culminate today.

Warren Hegg, national supervisor for the ‘Keep the Spirit of ’45 Alive’ campaign:

It really became Edith’s mission in life that there would be this national day, that every day someone thought about that day in August when a girl was kissed in Times Square, that people would think about it more deeply. She said we should have a day for all the ordinary men and women of that generation who did so many remarkable things and never were really recognized for.
