Woods still mum, will play no more events this year

November 30, 2009

November 30, 2009

Tiger Woods will play no more events this year – including his own tournament scheduled this week.

Statement from his website:

Due to injuries sustained in a one-car accident last week, Tiger Woods will be unable to play in the 2009 Chevron World Challenge. “I am extremely disappointed that I will not be at my tournament this week,” Woods said. “I am certain it will be an outstanding event and I’m very sorry that I can’t be there.”

“We support Tiger’s decision and are confident the strong field and excellent course will provide an exciting week of competition at the Chevron World Challenge, said Greg McLaughlin, Tiger Woods Foundation President & CEO.

Woods will not participate in any other tournaments in 2009 and will return to action next year.

Woods did not meet with police over the weekend re: his car accident. He is not required by law to do so – just present his license, registration and proof of insurance, which his lawyer, MARK NEJAME, did on Sunday. Police cryptically say the investigation “is ongoing and charges are pending.” Charges?

Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman Sgt KIM MONTES:

If we’re unable to meet with him, we’ll move on with our investigation. [Montes called the delays] very unusual, because it’s such a minor accident.

Woods’ agent MARK STEINBERG in a statement:

We have been informed by the Florida Highway Patrol that further discussion with them is both voluntary and optional. Although Tiger realizes that there is a great deal of public curiosity, it has been conveyed to FHP that he simply has nothing more to add and wishes to protect the privacy of his family.

Ms Chelsea Clinton engaged

November 30, 2009

November 30, 2009

Chelsea Clinton is getting married…and not to the man in Kenya whose proposed dowry included 40 goats and 20 cows. She and her fiance Marc Mezvinsky (son of former Rep Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky (D-PA) sent an email announcing their engagement:

We’re sorry for the mass email but we wanted to wish everyone a belated Happy Thanksgiving! We also wanted to share that we are engaged! We didn’t get married this past summer despite the stories to the contrary, but we are looking toward next summer and hope you all will be there to celebrate with us.

Happy Holidays!

Chelsea & Marc

Congratulations, Ms Chelsea.

Crashers holding out for highest bidder

November 29, 2009

November 29, 2009

11-27 crasher update

Not surprisingly, the crashers have called off their Larry King interview because they want to be paid. The crashers’ reps reportedly contacted networks urging them to “get their bids in” as in mid six-figure range.

Gotta hand it to them – they’re milking their moment for all it’s worth. And from all the information that has been made available, it appears they may have financial (and perhaps legal) woes.

Their spokesperson, Mahogany Jones and their lawyer, Paul W Gardner are not talking – though it’s unclear if it’s their choice or they were told by the Secret Service not to speak publicly. MSNBC reported the SS had caught up with the crashers on Friday.

What happens when a foreign media outlet offers them seven figures?

Original report of accident, pix of  scene

Woods’ attorney canceled the interview that had been rescheduled for today. Woods is not required to do anything more than show his license, registration and proof of insurance.

Update on the accident details – the front left tire hit the hydrant – the right hit the tree. And most strange, both rear windows of the Escalade were broken out.

What does this statement sound like to you?

Statement from Tiger Woods website:

As you all know, I had a single-car accident earlier this week, and sustained some injuries. I have some cuts, bruising and right now I’m pretty sore.

This situation is my fault, and it’s obviously embarrassing to my family and me. I’m human and I’m not perfect. I will certainly make sure this doesn’t happen again.

This is a private matter and I want to keep it that way. Although I understand there is curiosity, the many false, unfounded and malicious rumors that are currently circulating about my family and me are irresponsible.

The only person responsible for the accident is me. My wife, Elin, acted courageously when she saw I was hurt and in trouble. She was the first person to help me. Any other assertion is absolutely false.

This incident has been stressful and very difficult for Elin, our family and me. I appreciate all the concern and well wishes that we have received. But, I would also ask for some understanding that my family and I deserve some privacy no matter how intrusive some people can be.

Meet the WH Christmas Tree growers: Eric & Gloria Sundback

November 28, 2009

Official Christmas Tree arrives at the WH (video)
FLOTUS: Holiday Press Preview (video/text)
National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony (video)

Eric and Gloria Sundback have been growing trees for over 50 years and in that time they have grown 4 official WH Christmas trees: President Reagan (2), President Carter and the Obamas.

So that’s 3 out of a possible 11 presidents. And no other family, grower or company has made it to the WH four times.

See here for how the growers are chosen and other specifics.

Here’s a nice profile (and above pix) of the Sundbacks from AARP (Blair S Walker).

They met at Syracuse University in 1950. Gloria was working on a Ph.D. in chemistry, and Eric had received a BS in pulp and paper. They married a year later, ended up in Washington, where Eric became a landscape architect and Gloria ran the household, which eventually included two children.

MRS SUNDBACK:

If anybody had told me I’d wind up in the Christmas tree business. I would have told them to go see their friendly psychiatrist.

Their first attempt at growing Christmas trees in PA wasn’t quite successful.

MR SUNDBACK:

We planted them on ground that had too much water on it and drowned the trees.

But their hard work paid off, eventually enabling them to purchase a 160-acre tree farm in Shepherdstown, WV. And now, a fourth visit to the WH.

MR SUNDBACK:

When you go to the White House, they treat you the best you’ve ever been treated. It’s like you’re an ambassador—or a king!

Nancy Reagan was awfully pleasant, and Rosalynn Carter was just impressive and wonderful. We thought she [Carter] was going to be the first woman president.

In the video below, they’re packing up and loading the official WH Christmas tree.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

MR SUNDBACK:

You’re helping make Christmas for the whole country. What we really like this year is that it’s going to a family. The children are there – the family is well-knit.

MRS SUNDBACK:

They’re looking for trees that have good form and for trees that have stronger branches because they use a lot of decorations.

MR SUNDBACK:

She had a word with the seed bed…’Well fellas, do you want to be a Christmas Tree now or wait till later and be toilet paper.’

That gets the tree growing.

You don’t want to let it go to your head because you gotta come back out and work again.

We hope they enjoy it as much as we’ve enjoyed Christmas as kids.

If the tree is good and they enjoy it – that’s what it’s about.

How it gets from their farm in Sheperdstown, WV to the horse-drawn carriage at the WH and who pays the freight?

Video of the tree and carriage pulling up to the WH to the sounds of sleigh bells and the Marine Band’s “O Christmas Tree”.

National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony (video)

Yesterday, the First Family received their official WH Christmas tree from octogenarian growers, Eric and Gloria Sundback (video).

There are approximately 21,000 Christmas tree growers in the US, and in order to be considered for a presidential Christmas tree, a grower must win the National Christmas Tree Association‘s national contest:

Each year the National Christmas Tree Association, in conjunction with state associations, conducts a national contest for growers to demonstrate their growing, grooming, shearing and presentation abilities, to select a Grand Champion Christmas Tree.

The Sundbacks won the contest held in August in Chattanooga, TN, thus becoming Grand Champions, once again.

President NCTA MARK STEELHAMMER:

Winning Grand Champion status is very difficult and represents the pinnacle of Christmas Tree farming.

The Sundbacks have been growers since 1956 (PA), ending up in Shepherdstown WV (1967), and this is their fourth win: twice for President Reagan (Douglas Fir – Fraser Fir) and once for President Carter (Douglas Fir).

MR SUNDBACK:

It’s an honor to represent Christmas Tree farmers throughout America as we present this fresh tree from our farm to the First Lady. The White House deserves the best quality tree, and we believe that a tree grown right here on an American farm can represent the nation well.

After winning, the growers receive a visit from the WH for the actual tree selection.

On Oct 20, Director of the Executive Residence and WH Chief Usher, Retired Rear Adm. Stephen Rochon and Superintendent of the WH grounds Dale Haney visited the Sundbacks and made their selection.

Wednesday, the tree was cut down, as well as “dozens” of smaller trees that will be used throughout the WH, including the Oval Office.

Friday, the tree arrived at the WH via a jingling horse-drawn carriage, the horses covered in red bows, the driver in black tophat looking Poesque and “White House Christmas Tree 2009” on the side of the carriage between wreaths with red bows. Playing “O Christmas Tree” was the horn section of the Marine Band.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Mrs Obama and the girls were there to greet the carriage and the Sundbacks, who were extra delighted since there are children in the WH.

MR SUNDBACK: It’s big enough for Sasha to climb in, I think.

Malia looks like she’s grown a few inches.

Official tree specs:
Planted 1996
18½ foot Douglas Fir
12 foot wide
Will be set up in the Blue Room

First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy (1961) was the first to put the tree in the Blue Room so visitors could see it and Benjamin Harrison was the first president to place a Christmas tree in the WH (1889).

Dec 3rd: the First Family will light up the National Christmas Tree, a live Colorado Blue Spruce “located on the Ellipse, just south of the WH”.

After a chat with the First Lady over cider and cookies:

MR SUNDBACK: Absolutely wonderful

MRS SUNDBACK: Talk about a thrill.

I’m curious to know how the tree and the Sundbacks got from WV to the carriage and who paid for the transport of all three. I imagine the trees were free.

Woods’ statement & 911 transcript

Here you go branson.

Something’s off. But he deserves all the privacy he needs and wants. Here’s the original post re: Tiger Woods’ car accident (pix/video)

Florida Highway Patrol had tried to talk to Woods yesterday but his wife said he was sleeping and would they come back on Saturday. They did and were turned away once again. Sure hope he is ok physically. Don’t know of there are/were any relatives in for Thanksgiving. The 911 tapes won’t be released until Monday at the earliest.

CNN:

State troopers arrived at the home of Tiger Woods on Saturday to interview the pro golfer and his wife about a car crash near his home, but were told the couple was not available to talk as scheduled, a spokeswoman for the Florida Highway Patrol said. The troopers were asked by Woods’ agent to postpone the interview until Sunday, spokeswoman Kim Miller said.

MSNBC has an animation put together already. And no. The Woods’ do not have to speak with police.

Susan Boyle posts/videos/interviews

Well Ms Boyle made it back to her homestead in Blackburn Scotland and looks fabulous in her robe and jammies. There’s no place like home, Toto Pebbles.

SUSAN BOYLE

But she had a rough go of it in New York when she wasn’t singing. She was withdrawn in her pre-performance interviews and her meet and greet with fans and yet when the lights came up she performed quite well.

Today Show videos (23rd): interview & I Dreamed a Dream & Wild Horses & Cry Me a River.

The Early Show (27th): I Dreamed a Dream

Here she gave a yeeeeeeee-hoo before she started singing and the crowd loved her.

Today Show – Rockefeller Plaza

Britain's Got Talent star Susan Boyle live in concert on NBC Today Show at the Rockefeller Plaza in New York

I didn’t see her breakdown, which happened not long after her performance.

From the UK Daily Mail:

The 48-year-old had been enjoying lunch with fans at the Rock Centre cafe in New York’s Rockefeller Centre. But she appeared increasingly withdrawn and started to tremble and suck her thumb. Then, visibly overcome with emotion, she bowed her head and began to sob.

Susan BoyleSusan Boyle

It happened just moments after she was presented with a patchwork quilt knitted together by hundreds of people from 28 countries including the UK, US, Australia, Mexico, Japan and Antarctica.

Perhaps realising she was crying in front of hundred of fans – and the cameras – Susan quickly snapped out of it and performed a lively dance.

A spokesman for Miss Boyle said: ‘She was just overjoyed and extremely touched with the reception she had had from everyone in America.

I think it’s reasonable to be overcome after being given such a gift. A few short months ago she had never left her little village and had no idea what the internet or YouTube was. I think she’s doing pretty darn good but she needs a better guardian – whether she likes it or not.

Don’t they have anybody who can give her a hug or at least notice when she is becoming worn down and take her away?

susan boyle

An interesting collection of reactions to Ms Boyle: Laughter, incredulousness, maternal concern, stares, picture taking. At least there was one woman (might have been more) who actually touched her to try and comfort her. I don’t know who the grey-haired man is (brother?) up there, but his body language says he wants no part of it and has no idea what to do.

When she’s in the US get her a nice motherly type with media savvy, good instincts and who is generous with affection, but also firm and no-nonsense. And Ms Boyle is asked about her mother in every interview – do they even think that it might be making her sad each time she is reminded?

Does this sound like her spokesperson has a clue?

She is definitely not finding it overwhelming or stressful. She loves the travel. She wants to do a lot more of it. She is enjoying herself. ‘She has realised a dream. She is just so happy.

Her fans will understand but her confidence doesn’t need to be repeatedly shaken like that. They don’t celebrate Thanksgiving across the pond but she had to see the celebrations here and of course Christmas is coming up. And why can’t she travel with Pebbles?

She seems to have wide moods swings and in all seriousness might benefit from a mood stabilizer. Just this collection of pix show her agony and ecstasy.

Early Show: Ms Boyle “I Dreamed a Dream”

November 28, 2009

November 28, 2009

Susan Boyle posts/videos/interviews

Susan Boyle on The Early Show yesterday (27th). Harry Smith tries to interview Ms Boyle but again she is subdued like she was on Monday at Rockefeller Plaza. It doesn’t help that he is looking down his nose at her like Charlie Gibson did to Sarah Palin. One wonders if they even have a clue. His voice, however, is quite lovely. I wonder what he sounds like when he’s angry or yelling.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

HARRY SMITH: This is a treat for me…Are you feeling like you’re living your dream, now?

SUSAN BOYLE: I’m feeling as if I don’t want my dream to end.

HARRY SMITH: Well this album has gotten off to an amazing start. It’s #1 in the UK – it must be so gratifying to know that so many people are in love with your music. Is it gratifying?

[134,000 copies sold in the UK the first day.]

SUSAN BOYLE: It’s quite humbling, really.

HARRY SMITH: The truth is they love you and they love your voice and we are just so tickled you decided to spend some a little time with us this morning.

SUSAN BOYLE: Thank you for having me.

Here’s her haunting rendition of I Dreamed a Dream. Very different than her Today Show performances (and momentary breakdown) four days previous. Today Show interview and Live Performances: I Dreamed a Dream & Wild Horses & Cry Me a River. Looks like she travels with the same orchestra at least.

Susan Boyle posts/videos/interviews

Here’s Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira talking with Susan Boyle on Rockefeller Plaza before she performs. She looks like she just woke up. The interview was similar to the Britain’s Got Talent finale – subdued, short answers, no interaction with the crowd. They ask about her album, her mom and whether she’s gotten around NY. Matt had interviewed her a few weeks ago out in LA for his NBC’s People of the Year segment that aired Thanksgiving night (video/text).

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Her debut CD is the #1 pre-seller in Amazon history – and they had a limit of three per order.

MEREDITH VIEIRA: That’s something, isn’t it?

SUSAN BOYLE: That’s quite an achievement, yes. All thanks to people like – like people out there.

MEREDITH VIEIRA: Folks here adore you – as you know. Welcome to the United States of America.

SUSAN BOYLE: Thank you for having me.

MATT LAUER: By the way, welcome to New York.

Ms Boyle says she’s been working since she got to NY but hopes to have a little time to herself later on.

She then sang: I Dreamed a Dream & Wild Horses & Cry Me a River and did a great job on all three, especially considering her affect. Though later she is sighted sucking her thumb. No kidding. Pix here.
