Heavy metal Franciscan monk gives up music

December 30. 2009

Franciscan monk and former African missionary, Cesare Bonizzi aka Fratello Metallo (62), wrote his first album 3 years after seeing Metallica in the concert. Brother Metal has 18 albums under his belt rope – about sex, alcohol, God, life and tobacco – and here in July 2009, he was considering going on a world tour. Can you imagine that tour bus?

His music isn’t about converting people to Christ – but to encouraging people to live life to the fullest.

I don’t play to draw people closer to Christ, to the Church or to religion. I do it to get convert people to life, to understand life, to grab hold of life, to savor life, to experience life, and enjoy it — full stop.

Several months later, however, Brother Metal feared the devil had made fame go to his head, so he hung up his microphone for good and shaved off his hair – not the beard.

But he still believes metal can spread the Gospel message of peace and love.

Not sure why but these videos seem to change after a period of time so if it the video isn’t what it should be click on the Reuters link.

I think metal is the strength of music itself. [But] the devil has separated me from my managers, risked breaking me up with my band members and has even come between me and my fellow monks.
